Atmospheric farming sim game
We Harvest Shadows is an adventure game for PC developed by David Wehle. It's a first-person farming simulator with a psychological horror twist. Here, players take on the role of a city-dweller who decides to move to an abandoned farmstead to live out the rest of his days in seclusion.
Compared to games like Lightyear Frontier or Slime Rancher, We Harvest Shadows has a more dark and serious tone that often delves into the human psyche. Newcomers can give the demo version a try to get a sense of what they can expect from the full game.
The horrors of farming
In We Harvest Shadows, you play as Garrett, who was formerly living in the big city, decides to exile himself to an abandoned farmstead to live as a recluse, thinking the world is better off without him. Thus, begins a deep and explorative dive into the mind of a man who has lost the will to live and discover the reason as to why that is.
The dark and serious experience of We Harvest Shadows is wrapped inside a farming simulator. Each day brings a new set of tasks and chores to do, including caring for livestock, tending the crops, and slowly working towards fixing up your dilapidated house. As you earn more, purchase better tools and equipment for your farm, as well as purchase medication for all your physical and mental pains.
The other aspect of the gameplay is its open-world exploration, with hundreds of acres of land to traverse. Fend off wild animals and discover the hidden secrets of the land, including something dark stirring during those quiet, lonely nights. Now, if you liked the demo and want more, you will have to wait for a while longer. As of this writing, there is no exact release date yet.
Dark and contemplative
All in all, We Harvest Shadows is not your typical farming simulator with relaxing and cozy vibes. Things quickly take a turn for the dark and psychological as you go about your farm tending duties and discovering the secrets hidden across the land. Suffice it to say, this is worth checking out if you're a fan of one of both genres.
